This is a pleasant walk which takes in two villages, a river bank and some marsh lands. The walk is mainly flat with some steep downhill sections. From Kingsbridge Quay take the 162 service to Loddiswell get off outside the pub in Loddiswell and spend some time exploring the village. Make sure you find "Lodd's Well" and wash your face in the fresh water ! From the pub walk back down hill towards Kingsbridge on the main road (ask the driver if you are not sure which way ) and as you leave the village you will find a track on the left signed "unmettled road" we don't know what this means either !) proceed down this track to the bottom of the hill where you cross the river Avon and turn right onto the Woodleigh Road. After a quarter of a mile or so you reach the main road, turn right and then cross the road at the old bridge, you will find a style in the field and a footpath which starts to follow the course of the river Avon. Follow the path across the fields and you will eventually reach a lane, turn right and follow the road to Hatch Bridge, this is an old stone bridge where the river crosses and there is a deep pool, an excellent place to watch the wild Salmon running up river in late September. Continue along the road (do not turn off !) and you follow the marsh lands on the left along to the village Aveton Gifford. Watch out for the Herons,Egrets, Geese and Buzzards. When you reach Aveton Gifford spend some time exploring the village (ask locals) and then walk towards the main road where you will find the Fisherman's Rest Pub here you can have a well earned drink before you catch the No 93 bus back to Kingsbridge. |
